Several members of our congregation have been doing some interesting travelling recently, and they are going to be sharing some of their experiences with us. We will begin our forum series on A World of Travel by watching a TEDx talk by travel guru Rick Steves entitled The Value of Travel.

Holy Week, which goes from Palm Sunday to Easter Morn, marks the high point of the church year and the culmination of Jesus’ life, ministry and teachings. Using the gospel narratives and Brian McClaren’s reflections in his book, We Make the Road by Walking, we will enter imaginatively into the unfolding events of this last week of Jesus’ life and reflect upon their significance for our understanding of Christian discipleship.

March 22, 2015 The Wisdom of the Celtic Christian Tradition

In this second session we will continue to look back to some of the beliefs and practices of the early Celtic Christians and forward to our own time and what we might learn from the wisdom of the Celtic Christian tradition. We will look at their sacramental view of the world, their appreciation of beauty both in the natural world and in the arts, their love of story, their acceptance of mystery in life, and their understanding of faith as a journey.

From the 5th to the 12th centuries their flourished a distinctive way of being Christian in the Celtic areas of the British Isles. In this first session on Celtic Christianity we will learn a little about the history of the Celts, their reverence for the natural world and the importance of landscape in their spirituality, and its relevance for our own practice of the faith.

In January 10 members of our congregation – Jim and Lynn Gryc, Richard and Katherine Collman, Bill and Merrell Thornton, Jim and Janet Dale, Catherine Williams, Dorothy Orde – went with a larger group of Methodists on a mission trip to Costa Rica. They will share with us stories and pictures of the work they did, the people they met, and they experiences they had during their time there.

Between busy schedules and long days, expressing love can fall by the wayside. We forget to say and do, then it gets harder to remember how, then relationships can be strained. In this forum, we will discuss Gary Chapman’s The Five Love Languages to help us understand how different people express and need love in different ways which is a key to strengthening relationships. While the focus is on couples, the concepts can apply to any relationship including your children, friends, other family members, anyone you interact with on a frequent basis.

To continue on our journey exploring John Gottman's work on building emotionally healthy relationships, we will spend some time gaining a better understanding of what can drive conversation in our relationships, identify challenges faced (and take a sneak peek at some of the reasons we be-have in what appear to be challenging ways), and explore skills to help strengthen communication in our relationships.

In this four-part series we will explore ways to better under-stand the dynamics of marriage and family relations as well as to put into practice ways of fostering these relationships.

In the first two parts we will view and discuss a video presenta-tion by John Gottman, who has done extensive research into marriage dynamics and been recognized as one of the ten most influential therapists in the last quarter century.

Specifically, we will look at his four negative behaviors that are most predictive of marital conflict and divorce, and his seven principles for nurturing and strengthening marriages.
