PRAYERS
The MICAH Team begins every team meeting by reading prayers aloud. The prayers are from Sabeel, a movement among Palestinian Christians. Based on information received from the last week, the prayers are meant to guide our understanding of current events through a lens of Christian faith.
Redeemer Christ, we recall how you were arrested, mocked, and abused for speaking truth to power and confronting the empire of your time. Assure all who are resisting brutal occupation and settler violence in the West Bank that you see them and will deliver them from their oppression. In the face of such violence, empower us to continue the struggle for goodness and justice.
Good God, we are overwhelmed with the actions of empires. Be with the many who are detained and abused by this unjust system and provide them with your healing and safety. In the face of systemic sins, help us to fight for the oppressed creatively and persistently. From the Sabeel Wave of Prayer
At a recent Adult Faith Formation…
MICAH screened a film: The Present. The experience of watching a short documentary-style film about injustice is powerful. We recommend that everyone watch this film, which you can do for free on Kanopy.com using your library card. You will gain an immediate understanding of the challenges facing Palestinians on a daily basis, even the simplest of activities are exponentially more difficult living under occupation and apartheid.
What Can We Do? How can we help those that are suffering?
Everyday choices of US consumers contributed to the downfall of apartheid in South Africa. Since 2005, Palestinians have called on the global community to engage in consumer boycotts. Check out: No Appetite for Apartheid na4a.org
• Check out this shoppers guide for a comprehensive list of brands to boycott and alternatives. For example: Do not buy
• Sabra Hummus.
• Use apps, like the Boycat App to scan barcodes to find out if a product is complicit.
• Check labels: barcodes starting with 729 indicate products made by companies based in Israel.
Boycott HP: HP-branded corporations play key roles in Israel’s oppression of Palestinians. They are complicit in Israel’s occupation, settler colonial, and apartheid regime. They provide computer hardware to the Israeli army and maintain data centers through their servers for the Israeli police. They provide the Itanium servers to operate the Aviv System, the computerized database of Israel’s Population and Immigration Authority. This forms the backbone of Israel’s racial segregation and apartheid. Boycott of all HP consumer products, including laptops, printers, and printer ink.
Closing Prayer: Holy God, we worship your name whenever we use our bodies and voices to support the most vulnerable. Lord, illuminate to us where we can bear witness in our lives through creative resistance, and continue to cultivate in us hope and courage to dismantle all structures of oppression.
