The Practice of Gratitude

O give thanks to the LORD;  for the Lord is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
Psalms 118:29

The scriptures encourage us to be thankful, and studies have shown that people who practice gratitude feel better about their lives and are more hopeful about the future. In this Thanksgiving Season we are encouraged to be intentional about cultivating a spirit of gratitude.  A simple daily practice of gratitude might include the following

  1. Recognize each day as a gift
  2. Take a few moments each day to count your blessings
  3. In counting, look at your life with fresh eyes, and remember  to count the small blessings
  4. Keep a gratitude journal
  5. Express your gratitude
  6. Look for ways to be a blessing to others
  7. Remember these words of Brother David Steindl-Rast, “In daily life we must see that it is not happiness that makes us grateful, but gratefulness that makes us happy.”
