January Work of Piety
Reading and Reflecting upon President Lincoln’s
Second Inaugural Address

This year we are commemorating the 150th anniversary of President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, and late last year a movie directed by Steven Spielberg was released about the months leading up to the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution. As a part of all this interest, we are going to be doing 2 forums in January on Lincoln and Slavery and Lincoln and ReligionIn addition, for our work of mercy we are encouraged to read and reflect upon Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address. In this address Lincoln reflected deeply upon the workings of the will of God in the midst of the trials of the Civil War. At a reception following the reception, Frederick Douglas told Lincoln that his address had been a “sacred effort.”
